Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) Assessment

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) Assessment

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is a rapid and often unexplained loss of hearing that typically affects one ear and develops over hours or days. This condition is considered a medical emergency, and prompt evaluation is critical. At Northeast Georgia ENT, we provide comprehensive SSNHL assessments, including evaluation of allergy-related and inflammatory causes of hearing loss.

What Is Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss?

SSNHL is defined as a hearing loss of 30 decibels or more across at least three consecutive frequencies within 72 hours. Symptoms may include sudden muffled hearing, ear fullness, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), dizziness, or imbalance. Unlike hearing loss caused by earwax or fluid, SSNHL originates in the inner ear or auditory nerve and requires immediate medical attention.

Can Allergies Contribute to Sudden Hearing Loss?

In some cases, allergies may play a role in sudden hearing changes. Allergic inflammation can affect inner ear blood flow, trigger immune responses, or worsen Eustachian tube dysfunction. Patients may notice hearing loss during periods of severe seasonal or environmental allergy symptoms. Identifying and managing allergy-related contributors is an important part of a complete SSNHL evaluation.

Our SSNHL Evaluation Process

At Northeast Georgia ENT, our assessment is thorough and time-sensitive and may include:

  • Comprehensive hearing testing to measure hearing levels and frequency involvement

  • Detailed medical and allergy history to identify potential triggers

  • ENT examination to rule out conductive causes of hearing loss

  • Allergy evaluation, when appropriate, to assess inflammatory contributors

  • Additional testing or imaging, if needed, to rule out neurologic or structural causes

Treatment Options

Early treatment offers the best chance for hearing recovery. Depending on the findings, treatment may include:

  • Steroid therapy to reduce inner ear inflammation

  • Allergy management, such as antihistamines, nasal sprays, or immunotherapy

  • Follow-up hearing tests to monitor recovery and guide ongoing care

Each treatment plan is personalized based on the cause, severity, and timing of hearing loss.

Why Prompt Care Matters

Sudden hearing loss should never be ignored. Delaying evaluation and treatment may reduce the likelihood of hearing recovery. If you experience sudden hearing changes- especially alongside allergy symptoms, tinnitus, or dizziness—seeking immediate ENT care is essential.
