Sinusitis Treatment in Northeast Georgia
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses that can cause nasal congestion, facial pressure, headaches, postnasal drip, and difficulty breathing through the nose. At Northeast Georgia ENT, we provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for both acute and chronic sinusitis to help identify the underlying cause and restore normal sinus function.
What Causes Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is one of the most commonly reported chronic conditions in the United States, affecting an estimated 37 million Americans. It is most often caused by infections following a cold or by underlying inflammation related to allergies. Other contributing factors may include nasal polyps, a deviated septum, facial trauma, hay fever, immune system disorders, or, in rare cases, tumors.
What Are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?
Individuals suffering from sinusitis may experience a range of symptoms including nasal congestion and discharge, postnasal drip, sore throat, facial pressure and swelling, loss of smell and taste, headache, fever, fatigue and bad breath.
In more severe or untreated cases, complications can include asthma exacerbations and, rarely, more serious infections affecting surrounding structures.
How Is Sinusitis Diagnosed?
In addition to a physical examination and review of your medical history, your ENT provider may examine the nasal passages for inflammation, polyps, or other structural concerns. Diagnostic tools such as nasal endoscopy, CT scans, MRI imaging, and allergy evaluation may also be used to confirm the diagnosis and identify contributing factors.
How Sinusitis is Treated
Treatment depends on the severity and whether the condition is acute or chronic. Many cases improve with medical management aimed at reducing inflammation and improving sinus drainage. Common treatments include saline nasal sprays or rinses, nasal corticosteroids, decongestants for short-term relief, and antibiotics when a bacterial infection is suspected. Antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, saline irrigations, and oral steroids may also be used to help manage chronic symptoms and reduce inflammation over time. For patients with persistent or recurrent sinusitis, additional evaluation may be recommended. In some cases, procedural or surgical treatment may be considered to improve long-term sinus function and relieve symptoms.
