Post-Op Adult Tonsillectomy / Adenoidectomy and/or UPPP Instructions

• Start with clear/cold liquids after surgery then progress to a soft diet as tolerated.
• Drink plenty of cold liquids on the day of surgery.  Drink extra liquids for 2 weeks to avoid dehydration.
• No crunchy or sharp-edge foods for 2 weeks (popcorn, chips, cookies, crackers, toast, etc.).
• Expect bad breath and a grayish/white coating on the throat to form that will slowly disappear over a period of 2 weeks.
• Expect throat pain, ear pain, painful swallowing and low grade fever for 10-14 days.
• Take all medications as prescribed.
• When pain tolerance is appropriate, you may wean off of prescribed pain medication to regular Tylenol.  Do not take Tylenol with prescription pain medication because it already contains Tylenol.
• Your physician may allow you to take Ibuprofen/Motrin (NSAIDS) for breakthrough pain.  Please call for instructions.
• No work or school for 1 week.
• No strenuous exercise or rough play for 2 weeks.
• Should you have any bleeding, call my office immediately and gargle with a glass of ice water. Continue gargling ice water until further instructions from the Doctor.
• Call my office for fever greater than 102°, difficulty breathing or with any other questions or concerns.

INSTRUCCIONES POST-OP PARA LA AMIGDALECTOMIA Y ADENOIDECTOMIA y/o UPPP

• Empiece con una dieta de líquidos claros/fríos después de la cirugía y luego progrese a una dieta suave según la tolere.
• Beba muchos líquidos fríos hoy. Beba líquidos extra durante 2 semanas para evitar deshidratarse.
• No debe comer alimentos crujientes o con bordes afilados por 2 semanas (palomitas de maíz, papas fritas, galletas, tostadas, etc.)
• Anticipe tener mal aliento y la formación de una capa delgada de apariencia blanca/gris en la garganta y lengua que desaparecerá lentamente durante un periodo de 2 semanas.
• Anticipe tener dolor de garganta, dolor de oído, dolor al tragar y fiebre leve durante 10-14 días.
• Tome todos los medicamentos según las indicaciones.
• Cuando la tolerancia al dolor sea apropiado puede dejar de depender de la medicina recetada y comenzar a tomar Tylenol.  No debe tomar Tylenol con la medicina del dolor que se le ha recetado, porque esta ya contiene Tylenol.
• Su medico pueda que permita que usted tome Ibuprofen/Motrin (NSAIDS) para dolor que no es controlado con la medicina recetada.  Favor de llamar para instrucciones.
• No vaya al trabajo o escuela por una semana.
• No haga ejercicios físicamente intensos o juegos bruscos durante 2 semanas.
• Si tiene cualquier sangramiento, llame a mi oficina inmediatamente y haga gárgaras con un vaso de agua con hielo. Continúe haciendo gárgaras de agua con hielo hasta que el médico le de nuevas instrucciones.
• Llame a mi oficina por fiebre mayor de 102º, dificultad al respirar o con cualquier otra pregunta o inquietud.
