Adenoids are similar to tonsils in that they can cause painful symptoms if they become enlarged or infected. Adenoids are made up of lymph tissue that is located in the space behind the nose. Unlike tonsils, they are not visible by looking in your nose or throat with a light. To diagnose adenoiditis a physician will ask about your symptoms and view the adenoids through a small endoscope. Depending on the severity of inflammation and symptoms a doctor will recommend treatment ranging from antibiotics to adenoid removal. Adenoid removal surgery, called an adenoidectomy, is an outpatient procedure. Typically patients can return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks. Learn more about adenoidectomy post-operative instructions.
Adenoiditis Symptoms
Some of the symptoms associated with adenoid enlargement include noisy breathing, snoring, nasal speech and sleep problems. The symptoms of adenoiditis may resemble other medical conditions, so it is important to consult a trained physician to properly diagnose any problems you may be experiencing.
