Post-Op Ear Tubes Instructions
- Start with clear liquids after surgery then progress your diet as tolerated.
- Expect your child to be irritable and sleepy for most of the morning following surgery, but he/she should be back to normal (or close to normal) by the evening.
- Take Acetaminophen/Tylenol for any pain, as appropriate for your child’s weight. You may use Ibuprofen/Motrin, as appropriate for your child’s weight, if Tylenol does not alleviate the pain.

Children’s LIQUID Ibuprofen/Motrin: ________ mL every 8 hours as needed for pain.
- Water precautions: Avoid ponds, rivers, lakes and soapy water when bathing while tubes are in place. Swimming in chlorinated and salt-water pools is safe, although ear plugs may be recommended by your doctor when going underwater more than 2 feet or if water causes any ear pain.
- Call my office with any questions or concerns or if drainage from ears persists for more than 3 days.
