Post-Op Adenoidectomy Instructions
- Start with clear liquids after surgery then progress to your child’s normal diet as tolerated.
- Make sure to drink plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration.
- Expect bad breath for up to 2 weeks.
- Expect your child to be irritable and sleepy for most of the morning following surgery, but he/she should be back to normal (or close to normal) by the evening.
- Take Acetaminophen/Tylenol for any pain, as appropriate for your child’s weight. You may use Ibuprofen/Motrin, as appropriate for your child’s weight, if Tylenol does not alleviate the pain.

Children’s LIQUID Acetaminophen/Tylenol: ________ mL every 4-6 hours as needed for pain.
Children’s LIQUID Ibuprofen/Motrin: ________ mL every 8 hours as needed for pain.
- No activity limitations.
- Should you have any nasal bleeding, squirt 2 sprays of Afrin Nasal Spray in each side of the nose. Call my office if bleeding doesn’t stop after 5 minutes.
- Call my office with any questions or concerns or fever greater than 102º degrees.
